Welcome to our official feedback forum. Do you have an idea? Do you recognize a good idea when you see one? We want to hear from you!

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

  1. Cloud service over the freenet

I have an idea to wrote plugin that downloads an .jar program from freenet and execute it. Execution of the applet is triggered by any sort of trust (for example WoT) not to allow an malefactor to turn freenet into big botnet, so applet needs to pass some sort of validation (for example source code and generated binary must match each other). Applet executed in sandbox that not allow it to do anything expect access the datastore. I think I'm ready to spend some time to develop such project, so I need any kind of blessing from freenet developers :)

    • Ramdisk

I want to run freenet from an ramdisk. If the computer is seized, is quickly and efficiently all gone. A pissed off the dictator may well be quite unforgiving. Problem is, there shoud be a maximum size of the entire filesystem /freenet which must by hold by the software. This works well until nuw, the todays update creates a crash. Also there is a need to an option, to backup nodes data to freenet himself, gives the option to recover the node from an single key. Such a key may be hidden very fine by using steganographic technologies.

just add chromium to freenet and set things so users should care less about cached .jpg and other stuff

        • Make one easy application, simple install

Freenet has been a disappointment so far for me. Slow, not much users. Too much installing and configuring. No wonder there's not much content. Why not make just ONE app that would include file share, discussion groups, chat/irc, streaming media (radios, video, webcams).. all this OpenNet anonymous stuff. Freenet would become a HUGE hit very quick. People would share terabytes of HD space, donate bandwidth. I would be willing to pay for such an application, why can't it be done? The technology exists. The CPU power is here. Where is the will?

Stop wasting time with internal disputes. Just make…

We are working on all of these things: improving speed, speeding up installation, integrating chat into the web interface, improving the web interface. However, I don’t think we can reduce the configuration much more than we have now, without either reducing security or performance for many users. If you have any specific concerns then please let us know.

          • user management

If two or more people (in the same lan ...) acces an freenet instance it could be godd if there are "user accounts". So that only the admin can change settings or add friends and "users" can use frost/download or browse freesites but not more...

We will need some sort of user management for Freetalk and Freemail, and we in fact have something like that now. When Freetalk is integrated, it may make sense to extend this login to the wider fproxy. However, separating the global queue to be per-user will require FCP applications to login with a password…

            • drop plugins if use to much CPU

some plugins should be dropped or unloaded if the CPU is at 99%
and only leave the basic plugins like JSTUN and UPnP

using just that 2 plugins freenet use less that 10% CPU (AMD 2500 1 core) but whit all plugins loaded after the usage of a plugin (WOT for example) the CPU get at 99% all the time

              • Get A Node Bitcoin For You Donations

I was using freenet years ago and I was looking at URI schemes for Bitcoin when Freenet came up in reference to the magnet URI scheme. I thought I would see how it looks now and recommend the last word in digital currency and recommend you try out Bitcoin as an alternative for donations. The Bitcoin network is also P2P and anonymous .

                • porting auto bandwith sensing from azureus

The bittorrent client Azureus, which is also GPL licensed and also written in java does very good work in automatically adjusting the maximum upload speed. Porting this feature to Freenet could maybe improve the overall network speed, because it would allow to upload as much as possible, without interfering (or getting interfered) from other applications or bandwidth sharers.

Automatic bandwidth calibration is a good idea. It’s not as easy as it sounds, but we may be able to get something useful from Azureus; when I looked at it last it looked hideously complicated… Also, some auto-calibration systems are probably too aggressive for us, or at least we should ask. At the moment we take half of the uplink limit from UPnP, or ask the user if UPnP isn’t working.

                  • configurable progress screen refresh time

Make the timeout of the refressh screen configurable.
Using many parallel tabls with a refreshtime of 2 secs makes the browser very slow.
I could do with a refreshtime of 5 or 10 seconds..
Other people using only view (one) tab, may want to refresh more often (2 secs) to get the info fast...

                    • Support Chinese Character Search

In countries without internet censorship, freenet is a nice-to-have, but in heavily censored countries like China, it might be the only hope for many to access certain data. Still, almost noone in China uses it, and there are no resources in Chinese?

A very important reason I think is that the search function doesn't work when fed with Chinese characters - that ought to change.

                      • Installing freenet on remote Linux server without the need for a browser to setup parameters.

A method for completing a remote install without having to complete the installation with a browser would be a big help.

When govts look into peoples computers they should not be able to see or detect you have freenet running or installed , but you can see out and use freenet as you wish. Otherwise just by having freenet installed you have narrowed down govt search lists to "those likely to want to hide something", like freenet users. They may not know what your doing but they may now pay you a visit or up the activity watch on you because you chose to use an anonymity tool. How many of us have a spotless computer? Two basic challenges:
                            - Can they tell remotely that you have Freenet?
                            - Can they tell locally that you have Freenet?

Darknet makes the first much harder. Making the second hard will be very difficult – if it’s doing something it must be installed on your computer, or at least running from a live CD.

                          • Option to (dis)connect to different countries

If you have 40 (open) connections on your Freenetnode, it probably will be more save to spread your connections over a lot of countries. It will even be more save to block al connections to IP's from Denmark if you are from Denmark. I have different options in mind......

                            1. A checkbox which says: spread inserts over at least X number of countries. Standard could be 5.

                            2. Block ip's from this country (users can choose US, UK, DK, Spain...... etc.

                            3. Checkbox >>> Spread connections over X countries. Freenet will try to spread IP connections over 5 or more…

We might implement this eventually. It’s irrelevant on darknet, but on opennet, it might marginally improve things. The worry is that on opennet, mobile-attacker source tracing attacks (see the FAQ) make this sort of thing fairly irrelevant…

Nice, but client’s computer still has to use ISP’s server to access the internet. So FreeNet needs at least one (but rather more) dedicated server(s). Looking at the maps of the world, a great bulk of the population resides in a closely inhabitated areas, where at least one (but probably more than one) neighbor is within few mile radius. Most of them owns a computer....

Vote this idea if you agree: Sometimes things work. Freenet works. But it also needs a lot of tweaking and usability enhancements. But more important watherever the changes are: security goes first!

                                    • Yacy search engine integration to Freenet

I think Yacy is good thing for freenet, but it need to be implemented in core of the network, so it wouldn't be needed to install and run Yacy additionally to the base package.

                                      • Public partial-database mirror

For thoes that install/restart freenet, a publicly accessable updated online database.

You could submit partial information (ex. most used keys, data) to a website (www) 1mb-50mb

And you could randomly download thoes parts at realy high speed and merge them with your db.
Would help population large database of 4gb+
for thoes that don't have to worry about the legibility of running freenet.

You can move the storage folder, but it’s not easy to do so. It may be better to install to it in the first place. There is some stuff on the wiki about moving the datastore.
