Welcome to our official feedback forum. Do you have an idea? Do you recognize a good idea when you see one? We want to hear from you!

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

  1. Detailed description of Freenet interface

In a nutshell, I'd like to know/understand what Freenet is doing in more detail. When I hover the cursor over some info/option etc. in the Freenet interface, I'd like a bubble (or something) to pop up and give me some info on what the specific item means/does. There could be an option to off this (for the Freenet experts I guess).
    For example:
    - in Advanced Stats: what's the idea with the circle and the bars in "Peer Location Distribution (w/pReject)"? Store/Cache (CHK)/(SSK)? HTL? Payload Output?
    -"Explore a freenet key
Display the top level chunk as hexprint or list the…

Freenet takes forever to start. That's so annoying, it makes me want to pull my hair out!

      • Allow Dedicated Content Hosts

No one currently knows what they are hosting on their portion of freenet. This is a good for privacy and makes freenet censorship resistant, but it also makes freenet unreliable. Files that are not downloaded must be reinserted or they'll disappear. Freenet would be more consistent if it had more users, but it won't have more users until it is more consistent. When I tried out freenet, most files I tried to download were not actually available. So, I propose allowing people to knowingly and permanently host content that they can protect from deletion. Everything else would function the same.…

          problem.

          Download/upload queue database corrupted!
Your node failed to load the database (node.db4o) which we store persistent downloads and uploads in. This is usually caused by data corruption on disk due to e.g. power failure. The files involved are Y:\Freenet\persistent-temp-17559\ and Y:\Freenet\node.db4o. Please shutdown your Freenet node, and either restore them from a backup or delete them. Also check whether you are out of disk space. This message can also occasionally happen while Freenet is shutting down.

          • Freenet as distributed social networking software

Well, the last idea i gave about Ripple got me thinking: Freenet already has all the groundwork to make it a good secure alternative to Facebook, Orkut, LinkedIn, etc. One project that tries to overcome the privacy problems of Facebook in a distributed design is Diaspora, but Freenet in my estimation is already positioned to be ahead in the game, and this social networking application idea will probably help boost Freenet's popularity immensely.

A Freenet Firefox plugin could potentially really help the popularity of Freenet. For security, I would recommend to prospective users downloading the preconfigured browser JonDoFox.

              • Freenet Lite

I have a great idea to promote freenet.

Make a Firefox extention out of the source of Allpeers and call it Freenet Lite.

Allpeers was a darknet style p2p extention.
It went opensource when the investors pulled out.

                Please think about it.

                • Connect with wireless communities such as Netsukuku

ISP are the weakness of the network that government focus on. See recently in the news:
                  - French gov threatened a web hosting cie / French ISP FDN reacted
                  - Egypt shut down Internet access
                  - How about ICANN? They closed down wikileaks
                  - File sharing: France (again!) wants to tax ISP's to pay for music/movie download (state controlled culture)

How could you get around ISP and allow to spread your project in wireless communities such as Netsukuku?

Theoretically Freenet could run on a good android phone, although it’s a background app so maybe only on recent versions. The APIs we use from the JDK are (mostly?) also present in Android. Compile it yourself, see what happens. Also, please see the suggestion about freenet on phones in general.

Which suggestion? There are differences of opinion on the project, generally I’m more open minded than Ian, who is more practically focussed. ;)

                        • add a IP blacklist feature in OpenNet

this way reducing the possibility of connecting to well known (anti-p2p etc.) organizations' nodes.

For example, I'm interested on how to make a single server node in a LAN with GNU/Linux (without desktop), and give access to all computers in this local network through the central node.
Useful to control bandwith for example in a Cibercafe.

Make a page then! However, the section on the FAQ about network access will probably be sufficient for a basic install without persistent downloads.

                                  Hi,
I don’t know if this is something which has to be handled by freenet or if an external software could solve this, but I would like a system, which makes it possible to mirror a public webpage on a request base.

It’s probably better to do this by hand for the time being. In the long term who knows, but in the short term this is definitely out of scope for 0.8 and 0.9.

                                  • Link your service to wikileaks or cryptome somehow.

An Eternity data store is required for something like wikileaks. Wikileaks is in the news recently.
See if you can leverage this.

                                    • Explain the graphs in the advanced statistics page.

I heard about freenet from the buzz it created in the CS community. Back in the old version, there was a graph that showed the specialization of the freenet key store. I found the simplicity of the idea absolutely fascinating.

I understand the routing algorithm has been fundamentally changed since then. Is there a reference that explains what the new graphs mean and how they relate to a node's integration its peers?

                                      • Paid maintenance

In parts of Europe sponsorship and donations are not tax-deductible for companies. However, paying for support or maintenance of software is.

So I hereby suggest that next to the 'Donate' Paypal button add a 'Pay for maintenance' Paypal button. When paying the payer should get a receipt that can be used for tax purposes.

                                        • Spreadsheet for Uncensored Data

Would be great to share spreadsheet data and have multiple users with special access rights to collaborate. Ideal for sensitive experiment data, disaster monitoring (e.g. Japan), timelines, finances...etc..
